Flat, or a sideways trend, is a market situation in which the price of an asset fluctuates within a relatively narrow horizontal range, without forming a sustained upward or downward trend. On a chart, such movement looks like a horizontal corridor bounded above by a resistance level and below by a support level. A flat may occur over short intervals or stretch out over long periods.
A sideways trend often arises at moments of balance between buyers and sellers, when neither side gains a clear advantage, as well as during periods of low trading activity or while awaiting significant events. For the cryptocurrency market, known for its high volatility, flat phases are often followed by sharp impulse movements after the boundaries of the range are broken.
How traders view a flat
- some participants trade within the range — from support to resistance;
- others refrain from trading, waiting for the price to leave the corridor;
- a breakout of the sideways trend boundaries is often seen as a signal of the start of a new trend.
Understanding a flat helps a trader avoid mistaking sideways movement for the start of a trend and adapt their strategy to the current market state. Any trading decisions involve risk, so recognizing the market phase is just one element of analysis.
